about

The one and only time, in the 42 years that the band has been together, that the Fuzztones toured America was in late April and early May of 1984, as the opening act for Stiv Bators' new act, the Lords of the New Church. As with our subsequent European tour of 1985, where we opened for The Damned, we did play the occasional solo show off the beaten path. One such gig was at the Electric Banana, our second show in Pittsburgh (the first being the Decade on April 25th - the night before).
"Alive and Deadly" is a memento of the evening, and an accurate representation of the band's abilities at the time. Of particular note is the inclusion of several songs the band never got around to committing to vinyl, such as Paul Revere & The Raiders' "Louie Go Home," the Blues Magoos' "We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet," and Link Wray's "Hidden Charms." The other members all get a chance to step into the spotlight (except newcomer Ira Eliot): Deb taking the lead vocals on Mouse & The Trap's "Beg, Borrow & Steal," Michael Jay on the Seeds' "Pushin' Too Hard," and Elan on the band's own "Cellar Dweller." And while the set, at this particular time in their career, consisted largely of cover versions, the original arrangement of "Me Tarzan You Jane," a band original that was later recorded by the L.A. line-up, makes an appearance here. Other covers that were later recorded by that line-up are given the Lysergic treatment here as well, including Music Machine's "People In Me," and the Shadows of Knight's "I'm Gonna Make You Mine."
Future line-ups would go on to feature quite a bit more original material, and to even designate Davie Allan's "Blues Theme" as the set's opening number (a tradition that still holds today) and the Sonics' "Strychnine" as the encore (again, a long-standing tradition).
What we have here is a document of a moment in time - the band still young and fresh, tight as hell but still finding it's identity. I hope you enjoy it.
